Recap

A depleted Dons side lost 4-0 to Rangers at Ibrox in the lunchtime kick-off in Glasgow.

The Dons went into this match with no-less than nine first team players out between injury and COVID-19 self-isolation.

Jonny Hayes, Niall McGinn Marley Watkins, Tomas Cerny, Dylan McGeouch and Scott Wright were all out injured whilst Ross McCrorie tested postitive for COVID-19 whilst on international duty for Scotland.  He would have also been out of this game anyway due to the terms of his loan deal with Rangers, his Scotland team mates Lewis Ferguson and Connor McLennan also had to self-isolate.

Scott Wright was ruled out due to a groin problem.

Aberdeen had gone unbeaten away from home isince last December, a run that totalled 21 games in all competitions – that was until now.

Joe Lewis who made his 200th appearance for the Dons, was kept busy through the game.

In the fourth minute he managed to block a low drive from Ryan Kent at a close angle.

The first of the four goals came in the 15 minute when Ryan Kent 25 yard drvie took a deflection off Tommie Hoban’s head, Lewis didn’t have a chance and it went in off the far post.

There was a call from Rangers for a penalty shortly after when Ojo looked to have clipped Joe Aribo inside the box, but it was waved away by Nick Walsh.

Kemar Roofe made it 2-0 for Rangers after picking up a pass from Connor Goldson in the 30th minute.  Roofe stepped inside Andy Considine and fired his low drive beyond Joe Lewis.

Matty Kennedy had an opportunity at the end of the first half, his free kick went up and over the defensive wall but McGregor saved the shot.

It didn’t take long into the second half for Rangers to make it 3-0.  Scott Arfield fired his shot that took a deflection off Shay Logan’s back and a wrong footed Lewis saw the ball go into the net in the 50th minute.

And shorty after Rangers were awarded the obligatory penalty after Andy Considine took Leon Balogun in the box.  Considine picked up a yellow and James Tavernier scored from the spot to make it 4-0.

Sub Curtis Main had a chance in the 80th minute, but his shot went straight to keeper McGregor.

A positive, Ryan Duncan came on in the 84th minute to replace Greg Leigh – aged 16 years and 309 days – giving him a short but important experience in such a high profile game.

We need to pick ourselves up for the midweek fixture against bottom club Hamilton on Wednesday.
