Recap

The Dons lost out to Rangers in our season opener at Pittodrie on Saturday.

It was a lacklustre affair with Ryan Kent scoring the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

Andy Considine received a straight red card late on for a challenge on Rangers sub, Scott Arfiled in the 86th minute.

Jonny Hayes started on his return to the club, with Bruce Anderson leading the line in the absence of Sam Cosgrove and Curtis Main.

New signings, Tommie Hoban and Ryan Edmondson were on the bench.

Aberdeen struggled to get into the game during the first half, ultimately just chasing the ball and it was Rangers’ dominance that paid off when Alfredo Morelos played through Ryan Kent who left footed the shot into the net in the 21st minute.

Funso Ojo fired a low drive from 25 yards that took a deflection, Allan McGregor scrambled across goal to collect it in the 29th minute.

James Tavernier had an attempt shortly after but it flew wide of the back post and Morelos then fired a shot wide of Joe’s right hand post.

Into the second half, and Rangers broked upfield in the 59th minute after a poor touch from Funso Ojo which he lost possession, and Aberdeen were lucky that the attempted throughball bounced of the heel of Ash Taylor.

The ball fell to Ianis Hagi but his show flew high over the bar.

The Dons tried to force an equaliser after a scramble in front of the Rangers goal-line in the 63rd minute, with McGregor picking it out from the melee.

New signing, Ryan Edmondson made his Dons debut, coming on in the 65th minute to replace Bruce Anderson.  Just for the short spell of play he had, he looks promising.

In the 67th minute Hagi fired a 22 yard drive, that took a deflection and Lewis did well to push it wide.

Lewis Ferguson denied Joe Aribo in the 84th minute, with a sliding tackle at the edge of the box as he was about to shoot.

Andy Considine was shown a straight red in the 86th minute, after catching Scott Arfield on the follow through.

Ranger were denied their second goal when an unmarked Joe Aribo went straight through on goal, but fired beyond Lewis.

Not the opening start to the season the Red Army were looking for – not the best of watches for those watching at home.
