Recap

One step forward (of sorts) and two steps back, where do you start with this dismal display at Pittodrie against St Johnstone on Wednesday night?

The glimmer of light from Saturday’s performance against Rangers was completely extinguished in this gutless performance at Pittodrie, having now just taken three points from our last five Premiership games.

Derek McInnes made three changes to the starting line-up from the team that face Rangers last weekend.

New signing Ronald Hernandez made his Dons debut, with Ryan Hedges and Jon Gallagher returning to the starting XI.

Shay Logan, Funso Ojo and Niall McGinn were all dropped to the bench as a result.

Aberdeen had the opening chance in the third minute when Jon Gallagher fired a low 12 yard drive into the side netting after picking up a cross from Ryan Hedges.

But we went behind in the sixth minute when Ali McCann exploited the Aberdeen back-line, pushed forward at goal and lifted the ball above Joe Lewis and put the ball into the net..

Ash Taylor went off injured in the 20th minute and was replaced by Mikey Devlin.

In the 32nd minute we came close to scoring an equaliser when Scott McKenna picked up a corner from Matty Kennedy, but his header flashed wide of goal.

In the 43rd minute, Ryan Hedge’s shot was punched clear by Zander Clark. our first shot on target in the first half.

Niall McGinn came on at the start of the second half, replacing Jon Gallagher.

Matty Kennedy found Sam Cosgrove in the 50th minute with a pass but Sam’s effort was blocked by the foot of Zander Clark.

Niall McGinn put a cross along the face of goal but there was nobody to pick it up.

Ryan Hedges played a short free-kick to McGinn, who then picked up Scott McKenna in the box with a curling cross in the 77th minute, but his effort was saved by Clark and Sam Cosgrove failed to make the most of the rebound.

Our final effort came from Niall McGinn in injury time when his free kick went over the St Johnstone wall and cracked off the inside post.

The frustrated Red Army made their feelings known, as we look ahead to our Scottish Cup match against Kilmarnock at the weekend.  It’s difficult to see where the goals will come from if we continue like this.
