Recap

Eye bleeding stuff.

Aberdeen lost their grip on third in the Scottish Premiership, after losing to Motherwell at Pittodrie on Wednesday night (22 January 2020).

We made two changes to the starting XI that won against Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup at the weekend.

Lewis Ferguson returned from suspension, and Jon Gallagher, Bruce Anderson and Connor McLennan were all dropped to the bench.

Ash Taylor had the opening chance in the sixth minute when he picked up a Niall McGinn corner but he fired it over the crossbar.

Motherwell came close to open the scoring when Christopher Long’s low drive from a tight angle was put across goal by Joe Lewis in the 19th minute.

Not longer after the Dons threatened when Shay Logan’s cross from the right was headed by Sam Cosgrove into the box towards Andrew Considine at the back post.  Andy’s volley was blocked by Well keeper Mark Gillespie’s feet and put out wide for a corner.

Motherwell suffered an injury setback in the 31st minute when Long looked to have twisted his ankle, he was replaced by Christian Illic.

Five minutes after Niall McGinn fire a shot over from 25 yards.

Motherwell opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time.  Liam Polworth fired in a free kick out on the right to the far post.  Liam Donnelly got a free header and put the shot beyond Joe Lewis.

There wasn’t much quality on show from either side in the second half.

Aberdeen tried to get an equaliser, with Cosgrove and Taylor both heading over their shots.

In the 73rd minute, Cosgrove picked up a corner from Niall McGinn but his header went straight at the keeper.

Aberdeen were denied a penalty by Willie Collum, when a quickly taken free kick released Considine into the box.  Declan Gallagher slid late onto Considine – but the ref waved play on.

McInnes went for a double sub for the final ten minutes.  With Curtis Main and Bruce Anderson coming on for Shay Logan and Ash Taylor.  It was the last throw of the dice to try and get something from the game.

It wasn’t to be and the points went to the Lanarkshire side – opening a four point gap between the teams in the Scottish Premiership.

The winter blues have set in already.
