Relegation Realities and the Paisley Post-Mortem
Welcome back to the AFC DONScast. It’s Easter Sunday, and Graeme is here with your weekly Dons news update, though unfortunately, it’s not the easiest of listens this week .
As manager Stephen Robinson bluntly put it, “We’re in a relegation fight”. Following a dismal 2-0 defeat on the road to St Mirren, the unthinkable prospect of slipping out of the top flight is suddenly a very real possibility for a club that has never played outside Scotland’s top tier in its 123-year history.
The Match: St Mirren 2 – 0 Aberdeen
Returning from the international break, Aberdeen made five changes, including the return of skipper Graeme Shinnie and Per Kristian Bratveit in goal. However, from the first whistle, the Dons were firmly second best. St Mirren relentlessly peppered the penalty area, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 40th minute with a brilliant strike from Jonah Ayunga.
Despite a triple substitution at half-time that sparked a brief revival, including a decent headed chance for Olusanya – the Buddies put the game to bed in the 83rd minute when Alex Gogic was given the absolute freedom of Paisley to head home a corner.
The Fallout: DonsTalk Reaction
If the mood was bleak in the away end, the DonsTalk forum was scorching. Fans felt the traveling support showed up ready to back the team, but the players failed to deliver the required desire and work rate on the pitch. The feedback was brutal but fair, with massive concerns raised over individual performances, including Kevin Nisbet being left isolated up top and the midfield being completely overrun.
News & Updates
Away from the pitch, there is plenty happening around Pittodrie:
-
Squad Movements: Aberdeen has signed 27-year-old Ugandan international defender Elvis Bwomono on a short-term deal, reuniting him with Robinson to help cover a mounting defensive injury crisis. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Sivert Heltne Nilsen departs for Norwegian side FK Haugesund
-
Boardroom & Stadium: The club has officially joined the Union of European Clubs (UEC) to advocate for fairer UEFA revenue distribution. Back home, talks regarding the new beach stadium have missed their Q1 timeline, as funding hurdles with Aberdeen City Council continue.
-
Ticketing: A massive shoutout to the Red Army, over 7,000 season tickets have already been snapped up for the 2026/27 campaign!
Heartbreak for Aberdeen Women
It was a mightily painful Sunday afternoon for Aberdeen Women at Links Park. Despite taking a lead just three minutes in through Maddie Finnie, Montrose controlled much of the game. Martin grabbed a deserved equalizer with five minutes remaining, before absolute devastation hit in the 96th minute. Aberdeen failed to clear their lines, allowing Taylor to secure a 2-1 win for Montrose, leaving the Dons plunging deeper into relegation play-off worry with just three games left.
Looking Ahead: Legends Day
We need the Pittodrie roar back. Our next home clash is against Hibs on Saturday, April 11th at 3 pm, marking our inaugural Legends Day. The club is celebrating the King of the Beach End, record goalscorer Joe Harper.
