Rain Stops Play, But The Transfer Carousel Keeps Spinning
It has been a wet and windy week in the North East, leaving the Red Army with a rare weekend off. With the Merkland Stand area deemed unsafe, our clashes with Celtic and Motherwell have been pushed to March 4th and February 18th respectively.
However, while the pitch is quiet, the boardroom at Pittodrie has been anything but. In this week’s AFC DONScast, we delve into the major headlines shaking up the squad.
The Managerial Hunt Hots Up
Following Jimmy Thelin’s departure, all eyes are on Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. Reports indicate that Eirik Horneland is the prime target. The former Brann and St Etienne boss is rumoured to have held face-to-face talks in the Granite City. Known for high-intensity, attacking football, his potential appointment feels imminent.
Ins and Outs
The January window has seen a flurry of activity:
-
IN: We welcome German midfielder Dennis Geiger on loan from Hoffenheim and defender Tom McIntyre on a short-term deal to shore up the backline.
-
OUT: It is the end of an era for Leighton Clarkson. The 2025 Scottish Cup winner has moved to Blackpool for regular first-team football. We also see Adil Aouchiche recalled by Sunderland and Peter Ambrose head to Hungary on loan.
A Sad Farewell
The club is also mourning the loss of Tommy McMillan (81). A defensive rock of the late 60s and a hero of the 1970 Scottish Cup winning side, Tommy was a true gentleman of the game. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Looking Ahead
We return to action this Wednesday with a trip to face Dundee United (weather permitting!), followed by Motherwell away on Sunday.
Catch the full breakdown of all these stories and more in this week’s episode.
