Recap

Where do you start with this shit show?

A lot has been made about the loss of players due to injury and COVID-19 self-isolation, but there should have been more than enough strength and quality in the squad to overcome St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup despite this.

Aberdeen went out of the Scottish League Cup at the first time of asking following a 2-1 defeat to St Mirren.

An 88th minute McGrath winner  due to a mistake from Joe Lewis sees the Paisley side progress into the quarter finals.

Derek McInnes made two changes to the starting line-up.  Jonny Hayes returned from injury, with Niall McGinn also starting.  Ash Taylor and Curtis Main were dropped to the bench.

St Mirren made an excellent start to the game after Durmus but them ahead in the fourth minute, firing his 25 yard shot over the defensive wall and into the net – Joe Lewis had no chance.

Richard Tait nearly doubled their advantage in the seventh minute, his 20 yard run through midfield was left unchallenged and his low shot hit the post, Greg Leigh hit the ball clear.

The Dons just didn’t make their mark on the game and it was all St Mirren as the first half continued.

St Mirren had a penalty shout after Tommie Hoban looked to have taken him down in the boc, but referee Don Robertson ignored the calls.

Connolly had a chance in the 40th minute, his powerful drive blocked by Joe Lewis, and just moments later Obika missed a chance in front of goal, but his effort went wide of goal.

And against the run of play, Aberdeen equalised through a Niall McGinn goal in the 43rd minute to make it all square at half-time.

To try and even things out, Derek McInnes made a double change at half-time.

Curtis Main and Michael Devlin came on, replacing Niall McGinn and Sam Cosgrove, changing the formation to a 4-5-1.

Tommie Hoban had the opening chance in the second half, picking up a ball from a corner with no-oone marking him, but his headed attempt went wide.

Aberdeen were more robust, but absolutely no quality or creativity to make any difference.

Main fired a powerful drive in the 63rd minute, but Jak Alnwick saved his shot.

Matty Kennedy had a chance shorly after but his shot was deflected wide.

And in a blow, St Mirren scored the winner in the 88th minute, with a low shot from Jamie McGrath.  Joe spilled the ball and it went into our net.

A disgraceful mediocre performance from the Dons as we bow out of the League Cup, and ultimately it should be piling pressure on Derek McInnes to improve – the recent results have been unacceptable.

Next week… St Mirren in the league .
