Recap

Back to league matters after the international break and our first visit to Tannadice in the Scottish Premiership since 2016.

It was a frustrating day for the Dons, despite our domination against Dundee Utd we failed to take the opportunities to take the points and put pressure on Hibs in third place.

Derek McInnes made one change to the starting line-up that defeated St Mirren 2-1 at Pittodrie.  Niall McGinn was dropped to the bench in favour of Connor McLennan.

Jonny Hayes had the opening opportunity in the second minute, his 22 yard drive saved by Siegrist at the near post.

Scott Wright should have scored for the Dons in the eight minute. Scott picked up a cross from Ryan Hedges, his chipped effort beat the Dundee Utd keeper but Mark Connolly cleared off the line.

From the corner, Tommie Hoban should have also scored, his header inches wide from putting the Dons ahead.

The domination from the Dons was clear to see – Ryan Hedges fired a 25 yarder, but Siegrist pushed is shot wide.

Aberdeen were denied a penalty in the 29th minute, when a Ross McCrorie shot hit the hand of Connolly in the box.  It was clear cut, but not for Alan Muir who ignored the calls from the Aberdeen players.

Scott Wright was close again in the 43rd minute, but Siegrist saved Wright’s 10 yard drive.

For all the chances we had in the first half, it was frustrating we went into half time level pegging.

The second half wasn’t as clear cut – with neither team creating anything of much significance until late in the half.

Ryan Edmondson came on for Scott Wright on the hour mark and Niall McGinn was put on for Connor McLennan in the 74th minute.

Niall nearly score from the off, he managed to get a 25 yeard free kick over the Utd defensive wall – but again the shoit was denied by Siegrist.

United’s first real chance of the game came in the 80th minute after Logan Chalmers played clen through on goal, but his shot was denied by a brilliant save by Joe Lewis.

In the dying minutes of the game, Ross McCrorie picked up a cross from Niall McGinn, but his header went wide.

All in all a very frustrating day for the Dons – it was there for the taking as we head into one of our games in hand against Hamilton at Pittodrie on Tuesday.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said on the handball decision: “It looks like it’s hit Lawrence Shankland’s hand before the keeper gets there. Whether it’s going in or not, it’s a handball.

“That decision didn’t go our way, but we still had plenty of time to go and do more, and that’s why we’re disappointed. It was just that last part we needed somebody to step up and take ownership.”
