Aberdeen Through To Scottish Cup Semi-Finals Following St Mirren Win

It may not have been pretty, but Aberdeen secured a Scottish Cup Semi-Final spot after defeating St Mirren 2-0 at a very wet Paisley this evening.

Derek McInnes made two changes to the side that lost to Ross County last weekend.

Funso Ojo returned from injury and Matty Kennedy made the starting line-up.

Sam Cosgrove and Connor McLennan dropped to the bench.

Aberdeen had the early chance, when Curtis Main picked up a free kick from the left from Dean Campbell, but his header flew over goal.

Four minutes later, the Dons took an early lead, when Matty Kennedy broke down the left and passed the ball to Lewis Ferguson.  Ferguson took the touch and broke towards goal and fired a swerving right-footed shot into the back of the net and beyond Vaclav Hladky.

St Mirren’ Lee Hodgson was allowed the chance to push forward and fire a cross in, but it was deflected wide for a corner.

The home team continued to ply on the pressure but failed to get pass a rugged Dons back line.

Just before half-time Obika came close to an equaliser after picking up a Cammy McPherson free-kick from the left.  Joe Lewis was on hand to get the ball.

Into the second half, and the Dons were dealt an early below, when Scott McKenna pulled up with a hamstring injury, signalling immediately to the line for him to come off.  Mikey Devlin was his replacement.

Just after, Aberdeen had a goal ruled out for offside, when Kennedy delivered a cross from the left which was delivered to Curtis Main who headed the ball perfectly.

WIth just over the hour on the clock, a Jamie McGrath drive from 25 yards was saved by Joe Lewis.

Aberdeen secured the win in a nervous finale, when Sam Cosgrove was bundled over in the box by Sam Foley, ref Don Robertson pointed to the spot and Sam comfortably slotted the spot kick into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to the Dons.

It was a tough watch a times, and very representative of our season so far, but it’s another semi-final Hampden trip for the Red Army in the offing.
